Inspiration
We wanted to make something that would have real world application and one teammate was really into sockets. So we decided to make something that would allow friends or family members who didn't share a common language to still communicate through the internet.
What it does
It translates your speech into text, then translates it and sends it to another computer. That computer speaks the translated words to the recipient. Both sides select the language they speak and can set their name on the screen.
How we built it
We first built a simple messenger app between two computers using Sockets. Then we integrated speech to text, and text to speech with translation.
Challenges we ran into
We had trouble assigning names to the chat users, and trouble integrating the speech to text and text to speech into the sockets framework.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
It works for the most part.
What we learned
Sockets are hard, and importing functions from files to use their functions are hard.
What's next for Speech Translation Video Chat Assistant
We will make the UI look 80x better.
