The growth of eSports live stream entertainment in the last few years has been tremendous. However, when viewing an eSports event through a live stream there are many limitations from a viewer's perspective. Each viewer has an identical view of the broadcasting. SpectateXR is looking to change that.

What it does

SpectateXR has combined high quality 360 video, Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality to diversify each unique viewer's experience of an eSports match or event. We want to bring viewers to the front row of the action in an intense, action packed eSports match whether through attendance and feeling like they are live at the event or even digitally with the characters in game. By providing a bird's eye view of the battle and giving viewers the freedom to move around and watch from any angle and perspective, we are elevating and immersing their spectator experience. From being a passive viewer to feeling like they've become one with the crowd or the game can completely change eSports live streaming experience.

How we built it

We built our platform using Unity to achieve cross platform compatibility between Mobile VR for Oculus Go and Gear VR and iOS utilizing AR Kit. To achieve our 360 video streaming, we utilized the Omni GoPro to deliver high res 5k resolution video.

Challenges we ran into

Working with a short deadline to prototype our eSports experience we needed to mock up live gameplay in order to create a compelling game feel that a user was attending a match.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Teamwork! Incredibly please with this teams ability to discuss, get on the same page, compromise when needed, and work through the challenges in a positive and inclusive way. Also, our idea of a platform is rather large, and in such a short time we were able to prototype all elements of the concept.

Whats next for SpectateXR

We'd like the privilege to share this concept at the AT&T shape event in June. We'd like to develop a unity asset, that helps future game makers add this live stream framework to their projects.
