Inspiration
Inspired by years of loving games, VR and vibes - I wanted to make a casual minimal game around an interaction that I found fascinating - connecting nodes in 3D space. I envision users of VR glasses to work on a virtual desktop - and I wanted to make a game that could easily pop up within their experience for a quick game.
What it does
Speck & Tether offers a tranquil yet strategic VR experience, blending arcade action with puzzle-solving. Players connect glowing nodes using vibrant tethers, creating satisfying chain reactions in a minimalist, retro-inspired world. The core loop involves precise hand movements to establish and maintain these connections, with satisfying visual feedback for successful links. The game went into early access - and I shared a short but engaging taste of its potential, featuring varied node patterns that require different approaches to solve.
How we built it
Unity, C#, Quest 3, testing via reddit community.
Challenges we ran into
Time! I am a father of 2, and my fulltime job has taken over for the moment. However, this competition has lit a fire under me!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
To get to early access and share with players.
What we learned
Some interactions need to be more robust, we need more levels, menu is buggy - but players seem to really like it, so I have some confidence. I've had the opportunity to thin a lot about the game, so ready for another sprint now. The music elements have become a lot more important, so we may lean into the rhythm game elements.
What's next for Speck & Tether
Debug interactions, then hit the level design super hard, improve AR mode so its ready for VR Glasses!
