Inspiration

Other interactive apps online and our shared love of education helped to motivate us to create an app that combined education and environmental concerns.

What it does

We have a functional website with a tile-based map that is zoom-able and allows for searching of animals as well as a small paragraph describing what makes each animal unique.

How we built it

This website was created using a fusion of JavaScript, HTML, and CSS. Specifically, the Leaflets library was utilized to handle the creation of the map and popups within the browser. In addition, the site is hosted by infinityfreeapp.

Challenges we ran into

Implementing photos was an issue because we wanted to get copyright free/correct license photos and the website we used for endangered species information (WWF) did not allow its photos to be used publicly. In addition, Leaflet maps are always fixed upon the page when initialized, so other items on the page had to accommodate for that.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The search function on the website was a great feature that Ebenezer actually came up with during development. The search feature was very smart because it allowed you not only to search by animal name but also by their endangerment status.

What we learned

We learned how to use the leaflets library as well as how to host a website.

We also learned how to do workflow as a team and the best way to efficiently reference a website and get the data we need.

What's next for Species Trackr

We wish to include more animals from larger datasets. In fact, in the future, usage of multiple APIs to allow the website’s map and popups to be updated every second, will also be added to allow our site to be the most representative of the current statuses of the world’s endangered species as it can be.

We were thinking of integrating a login/registration system in conjunction with a trivia quiz entailing various animals from the maps. The extent of this idea was out of our time scope for the day, but it would definitely be something we would look at as one of the things next for Species Trackr.

Also waiting for our SSL Certificate to finally load would be nice as well.
