Special Education Co-Pilot

Inspiration

I am a Special Educator by training, vocation, and heart. The demands on Special Educators are never ending and increasing as student needs are more challenging that ever post pandemic. I am passionate about building tools that reduces paperwork, burnout and stress for teachers so that they can spend more time serving their students and less time struggling with paperwork burdens. As a Director of Special Education, I have participated in the IEP process for over 750 IEPs.

What it does

Special Education Co-Pilot is a tool that assists teachers in writing IEPs (Individual Education Plans - a long document that is legally required to be written for all students receiving special education services, at least once per year. IEPs typically take a few days to write. Using AI, we reduce that time to minutes.)

How we built it

IEP Co-Pilot is built on Glide a no-code platform. It uses Open AI's GPT API to generate content.

Challenges we ran into

An IEP is a long and dense document with many different parts. It was a challenge to decide how I would position the UI to maximize user joy, intuitiveness, efficiency, and effectiveness.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I'm incredibly proud of what I've built so far - When I was writing IEPs, this is a tool that I could have never dreamed was possible. It's so cool to bring this to life and can't wait to continue to build even more features.

What we learned

During this hackathon, I've learned creative tips and tricks to get the absolute most about of the prompts. I've used those ideas and new learnings into refining and improve my own prompts.

What's next for Special Education Co-Pilot

I am the founder of Playground IEP, a Special Education Caseload Management SaaS platform. My vision is to use this tool as a way to drive bottom up sales. Currently, Playground's sales cycle is incredibly long because of the top down nature that is required when dealing with sensitive student data. However, this tool allows us to a tool in the hands of teachers immediately without having to wait for approval from a higher up.
