Inspiration

As a glasses wearer for more than half of my life, I always get nervous when I need new glasses. With a prescription, I find it hard to trust what I see during an in person try on. And the online AR tryons leave a lot to be desired. There is a lot of science about how to choose frames for one's face and I've had to learn it by reading and watching youtube videos and trial and error. I wanted to package all of that into a single application.

What it does

Specfit is a unique app that lets you scan your face and does a true scan of it. It measures important information like length, width, nose bridge width, eyebrow height, pupillary distance which are all great inputs to decide which glasses suit you best. It assigns an accurate shape to your face too. Then inside the app, it rates our stock set of glasses based on these criteria. You can then decide which one's to try on. You can bring your own links to frames from any retailer or just provide a screenshot of glasses you are interested to try on. It rates them in the same manner. Once you try them on, you can see for yourself how it looks and then compare all of the try ons side by side.

How we built it

As a solo developer, I pretty much built the whole thing using state of the art agentic tools. I made an initial design with pen and paper which I then carried over to stitch. With the wireframes created, I used Claude code for all the development work. The AI render happens using Nanobanana and everything is hosted on Cloudflare workers.

Challenges we ran into

The first thing was to build a convincing render of the frames on a face. I struggled initially with consistency in all pictures and iterated quite a lot with different techniques to ensure perfect rendering every time. Second was the design aspect. I am a developer through and through and the app went through multiple iterations with a lot of feedback from my community to reach the design it is at. I found this aspect of product building super challenging. Third was tweaking the onboarding flow for maximum conversion. My initial onboarding flow was very leaky and had about 50% completions. Again with continuous iteration it now sits at above 90% completions.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • App has been through more than 20 updates.
  • App has been downloaded more than 1000 times.
  • App flows won the Noise giveaways twice.
  • App has crossed a lifetime revenue of 200$ and is growing fast
  • I have posted more than 200 pieces of content for maketing the app
  • People from over 15 countries have downloaded the app.

I am an inexperienced app developer and before this one I haven't made any money from mobile applications so personally Shipaton has set me up for growth and focus through this project and a possibility of turning profit even as I work on scaling the marketing.

What's next for Specfit - AI Try on app for Glasses

Specfit is making steady revenue with slow growth. My plans for Specfit is to expand the funnel for downloads and paid conversion by scaling the marketing with a targeted UGC campaign. The app will also pursue affiliate marketing opportunities by allowing users to try on and buy real retail frames on the application.
