Inspiration
Spear of Longinus came from one simple but powerful question: what if someone tried to end all suffering in creation by killing Satan himself? We wanted to tell a story where a guardian angel named Florian is haunted by the soul he failed to protect, Jessica, and decides that the only way to stop any more pain is to go after the source of evil itself, no matter the cost.
What it does
The short film follows Florian as he discovers that the Spear of Longinus, hidden in a vault beneath the Vatican, still carries the blood of Christ and might be able to destroy Satan. He pulls Mira, a heavenly archivist, and Jonathan, a former angel now living as a man, into a risky mission that takes them from Earth into Hell, where Jessica’s fate and the true meaning of justice, mercy, and free will are put to the test.
How we built it
We started by outlining Florian’s emotional journey, from guardian angel in Eden to desperate warrior willing to break Heaven’s rules. From there we created a detailed storyboard that maps out the key locations, shot choices, and character moments in each scene, using strong visual contrasts between Heaven, Earth, and Hell to keep the story clear and cinematic. The storyboard became our blueprint for pacing, camera moves, and how the Spear of Longinus drives every major decision. We utilized Eleven Labs, Veo 3, Sora 2, Hailuo, Seedream, Seedance, Nano Banana, and Capcut
Challenges we ran into
Our biggest challenge was fitting a Heaven and Hell scale story into a short film without losing clarity. We had to simplify the mythology, keep the focus on Florian and Jessica, and still give supporting characters like Mira, Jonathan, Michael, and Satan clear roles. Visually, making the Vatican heist and the final showdown in Hell feel big and epic while staying feasible for a short required very careful planning in the storyboard.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that the story never loses sight of a single soul, Jessica, even while dealing with cosmic stakes. The Spear of Longinus is not just a cool relic, it is the engine that pushes every character into conflict, especially Florian as he wrestles with whether he is saving creation or crossing a line Heaven itself refused to cross. The storyboard captures that tension from the opening in Eden to the final confrontation in Hell. We also believe the quality of the project closely mirrors the quality of traditional anime.
What we learned
We learned how important it is to anchor big spiritual and philosophical questions in very personal relationships. Giving Heaven and Hell clear rules and limits helped make Florian’s choices understandable, even when they are dangerous. On the production side, we saw how much a strong storyboard can solve in advance, from pacing and tone to how to reuse locations and frames to get more impact on a short film budget.
What's next for Spear of Longinus
Next we will turn the storyboard into a full animatic with timing and sound, then move into full animation for a festival ready short. Beyond that, the world is built to expand into more stories about Florian, Jessica, and other relic driven missions, exploring how far angels and humans will go when they try to fix a broken world on their own terms.
