Inspiration
• A childhood friend with ASD • A picture book • A communication tool
What it does
• We created a customizable augmented communication application, SPeakON, designed to communicate uniquely by allowing tailored visuals and language between caregivers and children diagnosed anywhere on the autism spectrum.
How we built it
• Back-end: Using Java and Android Studio, we created an Android app Virtual Machine, • Front-end: • Design: hand-drawn illustration (intentional design - simple, straightforward illustration, colors that cater to the children special needs and requirements (based on research))
Challenges we ran into
• Teamwork: working with people for the first time was challenging. Each member had a different goal for the Hackathon, so it was difficult to prioritize what was important • 80% of the team was new to Hackathon. We had to learn along the way. The only experienced member had to take on the heaviest part • Time management: because of disagreement in ideas and goals, we started the project extremely late on the first night • The technical problem when deploying it. Small errors when using the API
Accomplishments that we're proud of
• Finish the project. To leave with a successfully working product, attend workshops, and have a good time! • Individual: each member had a good time and learned something (whether coding, designing or pitching) • Team goal: it was a rough start, but we came together in the end after respectfully confronting each member's concern
What we learned
• Communication. Communication. Communication. • Enjoy what you do. You will be motivated to go beyond doing something you love • Execution is important, it's all about ideas and intention
What's next for SPeakON
• Feasibility and User testing to gain insights, get feedback and refine solutions • Beta testing
