Inspiration Speak Up was inspired by the urgent need to address violence against vulnerable populations, particularly children, in Ethiopia and beyond. The prevalence of gender-based violence and the barriers survivors face in accessing support services—including social stigma, threats from perpetrators, and lack of resources—highlighted the critical need for a comprehensive digital platform that could provide safe, accessible reporting and support mechanisms.

What it does Speak Up is a comprehensive digital platform that provides three core services for victims of violence. The platform offers confidential reporting systems where survivors can document incidents of violence securely and anonymously. It provides access to professional counseling services, connecting survivors with trained counselors who can offer psychological support and guidance. Additionally, the platform fosters community support through peer connections, allowing survivors to share experiences and find solidarity in a safe, moderated environment.

How we built it The platform was built with a focus on accessibility and user safety, incorporating multiple language support to serve Ethiopia's diverse population. Security features were implemented to ensure anonymity and protect user data, following international standards for privacy and data protection. The system integrates reporting mechanisms that can connect users with local support services, law enforcement when appropriate, and mental health resources. The platform was designed with mobile-first architecture to ensure accessibility across different devices and connectivity conditions common in Ethiopia.

Challenges we ran into Building Speak Up presented several significant challenges, including addressing the cultural stigma surrounding violence reporting in Ethiopian communities where social pressure often discourages survivors from speaking out. Ensuring platform security and user anonymity while maintaining the ability to connect survivors with appropriate services required careful technical implementation. Limited internet connectivity in rural areas posed accessibility challenges that required creative solutions for offline functionality. Additionally, coordinating with existing support organizations and establishing trust within communities required extensive outreach and relationship-building.

Accomplishments that we're proud of The platform successfully created a safe digital space where survivors can access support without fear of judgment or retaliation. By integrating reporting, counseling, and community support into one accessible platform, Speak Up addresses multiple needs that were previously fragmented across different services. The platform's multilingual capabilities ensure that language barriers don't prevent survivors from seeking help. Most importantly, the project empowers survivors by giving them control over their reporting process and access to resources that can help them heal and seek justice.

What we learned The development process revealed that technology alone cannot solve social issues—it must be paired with community engagement and cultural sensitivity. Building trust with survivors and communities requires transparency, consistent support, and partnerships with established local organizations. The importance of user privacy and security cannot be overstated when dealing with sensitive trauma-related content. Additionally, the project highlighted the critical need for integrated services that address not just immediate safety concerns but also long-term psychological support and community reintegration.

What's next for Speak Up Future plans include expanding the platform's reach to more regions within Ethiopia and potentially to other countries facing similar challenges. Enhancing the platform with AI-driven features for better case management and resource allocation while maintaining privacy standards is a priority. Developing partnerships with more local organizations, healthcare providers, and legal aid services will strengthen the support network available to survivors. Additionally, implementing educational modules focused on prevention and awareness can help address the root causes of violence in communities. Long-term goals include integrating with national hotlines and emergency response systems to provide immediate assistance for survivors in danger.
