Inspiration
We were inspired by the theme of accessibility, inclusivity, and diversity. An unconference is a participant-driven event where anyone can speak, but that's not easy for everyone. Speak-able allows less confident participants to safely gauge interest in a potential topic before scheduling a talk. This increases confidence that people want to hear them and allows them to participate more fully in the event. Everyone benefits when introverts, new speakers and anyone usure they fit in are encouraged to present their ideas.
What it does
Speak-able allows someone to submit a topic for other unconference participants to vote on. This allows the potential speaker to gauge interest in their topic and feel confident that people want to hear them speak.
How we built it
The design was created in Figma, then re-created with HTML/CSS, and Javascript. The back-end is node, express, and Javascript.
Challenges we ran into
- Front-end is harder than expected.
- Figma does not easily export its content.
- CSS is weird.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Learning a new subject, and new technologies.
- Meeting new people and working together to build a workable application in a few hours.
What we learned
- Front-end is pretty complex, so tools or libraries could be helpful.
- Great things are possible when people work together for a common goal.
What's next for Speak-able: Inclusive Unconferencing
It seems like an interesting concept and led to some inspiration to participate in an unconference.
