Inspiration
Our project, Sparklight Doodle, drew inspiration from the popular Chrome 2020 Halloween doodle game. Impressed by its simple but engaging 2D doodle game, we envisioned bringing this concept into the 3D realm of VR. Our goal was to enhance the gaming experience by merging the essence of doodling with the interactive and immersive nature of VR. We use UltraLeap to track hand movements, which enables users to generate doodles and send the doodles off to the direction of their choice. This component is deployed in the Sparklight Doodle game to further showcase its interactivity.
Sparklight Doodle is a VR game where players can create doodles using their hands in a 3D space. Using UltraLeap, precise hand movements of the player are translated into dynamic doodles that move in user defined directions. In the game, players can kill monsters by matching the doodle with the patterns shown on each monster.
We developed Sparklight Doodle using advanced VR development tools and hand-tracking technology. The core of the game was built using Unity 3D. For hand-tracking, we utilized UltraLeap to accurately capture and interpret the player's hand movements, converting them into real-time doodles in the game.
Challenges we ran into
One of the major challenges we faced was making use of the hand gesture for recording doodles, sending off doodles, and selecting the direction for which the doodles are heading to. These not only require accurate and effective hand tracking, but also holds high standard on our algorithms. Additionally, optimizing the VR environment for a smooth and immersive experience, while keeping the interface intuitive and user-friendly, presented its own set of challenges.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are particularly proud of creating an interactive, immersive, and intuitive game that presents a unique way of utilizing hand-tracking systems in VR. Our success in integrating this technology into a VR game that is both fun and easy to use stands as a testament to our team's innovation and technical skills.
What we learned
Throughout the development of Sparklight Doodle, we gained valuable insights into VR game development, hand-tracking technology, and user interface design. We learned the importance of iterative testing and user feedback in refining the gaming experience.
What's next for Sparklight Doodle
Looking forward, we aim to expand Sparklight Doodle with more features and interactive elements. We plan to introduce multiplayer capabilities, allowing players to doodle and interact in a shared virtual space. Additionally, we are exploring the integration of AI elements to provide dynamic challenges and personalized gaming experiences. Our ultimate goal is to create a platform where creativity and technology converge, offering an unparalleled VR doodling adventure.
