About

The theme of Hack@Brown 2023 was campfire, and we think that one of the central components of a campfire is community. Everybody loves to sit around the burning embers listening to stories and playing music. However, this community formed by music extends beyond a campfire and into college campuses. Jam sessions are often organized through word of mouth or people posting on Instagram asking for participants. To make this process more streamlined and accessible to everyone, we created a website that allows people from the Brown community to join public jam sessions called campfires and connect with new people. Users can create a profile, view active campfires or start their own campfire through the spark feature.

Challenges and Accomplishments

To divide the work we had two people doing front-end development and two people doing back-end development. The front-end developers had never used CSS or html before, and the back-end developers had to do lots of challenging work with databases to store the campfire and profile information. We are a group of first-time hackers so ultimately creating a functional, multi-page website from scratch was a big accomplishment!

What's Next for Spark

We have many ideas for additional features of Spark. Active campfires should show what instruments participants already there are playing. Also, when viewing active campfires, we would like users to be able to view the profiles of jam participants to see their class year, instruments, favorite genres, etc.
