Inspiration
Open-source software offers tremendous learning opportunities, but beginners often struggle to understand unfamiliar repositories, explore code architecture, and find meaningful issues to contribute to. SPARK was created to make exploring open-source projects easier and more accessible.
What it does
SPARK is an AI-assisted open-source exploration tool that helps developers understand GitHub repositories, explore code architecture, investigate issues and pull requests, discover contributors, and find potential contribution opportunities.
How we built it
SPARK uses a full-stack architecture with a React and Next.js frontend, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS, and a Python FastAPI backend. It uses the GitHub REST API to retrieve repository information. The project is designed to integrate Gemma 4 through the Gemini API for AI-assisted repository explanations and contribution guidance.
Challenges we ran into
Understanding unfamiliar repository structures, organizing information from GitHub, designing a useful developer experience, and integrating AI-generated explanations with repository context presented important challenges. Reliable setup, error handling, and verifying AI-generated information are also important considerations.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
SPARK brings repository exploration, architecture understanding, issue discovery, and AI-assisted guidance together in one developer-focused application. Its goal is to help developers move from browsing unfamiliar code to making informed contributions.
What we learned
We explored full-stack application architecture, GitHub API integration, frontend and backend communication, AI-assisted development workflows, and the importance of validating AI-generated information against actual source code.
What's next for SPARK
Our next steps are to improve repository analysis, strengthen AI responses with verified source context, expand automated testing, improve error handling, and make contribution discovery more useful for developers of different experience levels.
