Inspiration
The inspiration behind this project was our passion for space and our desire to share it with the world. All of our group members have had a passion for space and we wanted to show this in the form of an app. We created the platform Spacetorium which allows its users to learn about space.
What it does
The app Spacetorium is made to educate its users on key aspects of space. It has 3 main features which are spacecrafts, star map , and daily article. The spacecrafts screen showcases key information about spacecrafts and includes images of them. This is received from the NASA API. The star map screen is a 3D map which allows users to examine our solar system. They can also enter manual coordinates into the app which will show its location on the map. Finally, the daily article screen shows a new article everyday about space which is received from the NASA API.
How we built it
We built this app using the Expo Snack web editor which allows us to run React native apps in the web. It was a combination of JavaScript and HTML with some CSS elements. We did not have much experience in React Native so after doing thorough research and testing, we were able to grasp how to use it and created the app.
Challenges we ran into
One of the major challenges we ran into was including all the data into our app. Initially we were not planning on using APIs and instead we were going to manually insert the data. This would have taken a lot of time and would be an inefficient way of making the code. We decided to use APIs as they would update live and make the code much more efficient. This was the main challenge we ran into but in the end we were able to get through it.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
One of the main accomplishments we are proud of is making our first app in React Native and showcasing our passion for space. We had minimal experience in React Native prior to this but we were able to teach ourselves how to use it and in the end create an app which followed our vision.
What we learned
There were two main things which we learned in this Hackathon. We first learned how to use Expo Snack to make apps and all of the built-in features of React Native. We also learnt the importance of collaboration in programming as it allows for projects to be made quicker and more efficiently.
What's next for Spacetorium App
While we are happy of what we have created in the Spacetorium App, we believe this is just the start of its features. We have plans of adding more features such as ISS Location, Planet Data, and asteroid detection which would allow the Spacetorium app to become the premier platform for space knowledge.
