Spaceships VR is inspired by the 1995 retro game Fury3, and by the modern title Elite Dangerous.
What it does
In Spaceships VR Players are able to experience a space combat game in VR, with full 3D locomotion. You can play to beat your previous score, or try to do better than your friends!
How we built it
We created Spaceships VR using Unity3D + Oculus, Blender, Audacity, and Voicemod. We made our assets from scratch other than some of our sounds.
Challenges we ran into
We faced many challenges in making this project. None of our teammates had any experience creating VR apps, and we encountered many issues as we learned the ropes, like roadblocks prior to compiling code and issues for debugging. For example, our laptops aren't strong enough to power VR on their own, so we weren't able to debug with input unless we exported an Android build to our Oculus Quest 2 (a ~2 minute endeavor at times). We also experienced temporary motion sickness early on in development, which hindered our progress.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're very proud of the game we've made, which has a fun gameplay loop and great feel!
What we learned
We learned a lot about the tools and libraries associated with Unity + Oculus development, such as the new Unity Input system and the XR Interactions Toolkit, which makes VR UI a breeze! We also gained a lot of experience in Foley (recording sound effects), and in modifying sound effects to create a sound that matches what we want in our project!
What's next for Spaceships VR
Some improvements we'd like to make to Spaceships VR include motion controls, additional enemy types, and improved hud / cockpit elements!
