Inspiration
During our brainstorming session for a sustainability initiative, we identified a common challenge among our group: the weekend commute back home. Recognizing the potential for reducing vehicle emissions and improving commuting efficiency, we proposed the development of a website that facilitates communication and arrangements between different students who are willing to carpool. Our program aims to make student commute logistics more efficient, enhancing our commuting experience and offering a more sustainable and environmentally conscious solution to travel.
What it does
This website is made to connect the UIC commuter community. Since the majority of UIC students are commuters, we created a website where students can list carpool openings for other students to join. Users input their UIN, address, name, car information, and other important information.
How we built it
HTML and CSS were used to build the front and back end of the website. We then used JavaScript and PHP to format the APIs and other information.
Challenges we ran into
We had issues with understanding GitHub and had times in which we had merge errors that slowed down our production of the project. We also had formatting issues with the website data at first, as it wouldn't update within the project. We also attempted to utilize Google Firebase to make the data transfer simpler, but we ran into several issues and had to learn JavaScript to fix our problem.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were able to effectively set up an API, and format it with our website. We also had to learn CSS and HTML for the most part for its format to fit our ideals. We were able to make an interactive website that successfully visualized our goals for this project.
What we learned
We learned to effectively use GitHub to have multiple people work on the project and make push and pull requests to break down the project and streamline the developmental process. We also greatly improved our skills with HTML and CSS while troubleshooting and formatting the website.
What's next for SpaceRide
Some things we have planned next for SpaceRide are streamlining the website further and creating a more professional and interactive experience. We also wish to connect it to programs such as google maps to add more interactability within the program.
