Inspiration
Our inspiration for this project was guitar hero and retro 2000's fighting games
What it does
Our game features fighting mechanics, a boss-style NPC, and most importantly a guitar as the controller input
How we built it
We built this project in Unity, designing a fighting came based around the unique controls that a guitar offers: for example 12 spaces for the player to teleport to using different guitar frets. For the environment and characters, we used Blender to make 3D models, referencing the style of upcoming 2000's 3D games.
For the input, we performed frequency analysis using a discrete fourier transform to separate frequency peaks and pick the right one to identify the note played. This was a huge pain in the arse.
Challenges we ran into
Our main challenge was identifying the peaks in the spectrogram. Turns out, a guitar note is actually made up of many harmonics, and you need to pick the first significant peak... but how do you define a "significant" peak? Also.. your laptop cant be plugged in 😅
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of managing to implement guitar controls, and balancing a game around those controls. This was a very fun project.
What we learned
We learnt a lot about audio processing, game development in Unity, and music theory.
