Inspiration

Our inspiration was purely that we wanted to use and work with the oculus rift. Also to test the interface with other hardware such as the leap motion, the myo armband and more motion tracking divices we could get our hands on.

What it does

Allows movement via keyboard in a 3D world. Uses the rift to look/aim in the world.Hit enter from the number pad to shoot down invaders and asteroids. There is a "hand wave" motion which will activate a shield that will make you invulnerable for five seconds, but that "skill" is then on a twenty second cool-down.

How we built it

Piece by piece. Starting in two teams of two. When we started we had one team working on the environment and the other working on how the Oculus actually recorded motion as well as how to fixate it to the "player". We slowly integrated into one functioning game that encompassed the Oculus, Leap, and Unity game engine. That we hope to advance further when we can gain access to the resources once again

Challenges we ran into

One challenge we ran into was making the Leap and Oculus both function alone and together. To start we had to discover how each of the devices worked. We also had some trouble with some of the orientation of the Oculus; we tried making it be "forward" for the player by moving the head forward. Another challenge we ran into was just playing around with the scaling of everything to make it run smoothly for our settings.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of being able to create from scratch and entire working model of a video game. We had to understand the Oculus and Leap and learn how to implement these in Unity and we were able to do all of this within 24 hours. Completing the basics of the game, with intent to hopefully continue at another event where we can access the technology again.

What we learned

We learned that virtual reality is an awesome concept but its very challenging to actually code for it effectively. Also that the leap motion sensor is convenient but it can be quite hard to get to calibrate correctly.

What's next for SpaceShooters_VR

Hopefully "upgrading" the key board to some wireless controller that will allow more freedom of movement (via Oculus). We also hope to implement levels or a scaling difficulty We could even attempt to implement a scrolling environment that you can then move through while defending your planet from invasion.
