Inspiration
I love flash cards. But I always find myself using them incorrectly, getting distracted on tik tok or youtube while I'm taking a study break, and really just seeing them as a boring chore. In this hackathon, I aimed to create a project that would tackle these 3 key issues.
What it does
Space Out Is a flashcard game designed to help you have fun and study effectively at the same time! Here is how it works:
1) SPACE REPETITION Spaced Out! uses a spaced repetition system. As the user rates the difficulty of each flashcard, the program will show questions you struggle with more than the ones you don’t struggle with.
2) SPACED LEARNING Whenever the user masters a card, they are rewarded with characters they can use to match and form new characters. This helps you actually take a 5-minute break when needed while providing further incentives to study.
3) NO MORE SPACING OUT This app is designed to retain your focus. Music and animations follow a beat of roughly 60-90 bpm to induce your brain's “flow state”. Fun animations and graphics prevent users from becoming frustrated.
How we built it
I built it using Unity and all the code was done using C#. Animations were done using Unity and I hand-drew the game's graphics which were edited in pixlr.
Challenges we ran into
- Relearning Unity
- Keeping track of all the cards, when to show them and which decks they belong to
- Making the app look attractive so it feels fun and interactive
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I built this project alone and making any tech product by myself in 40 hours is not easy! I also really love how polished I was able to make this game (i.e. graphics and animations) and how I incorporated research (i.e. space repetition, goal setting/incentives, music choice, etc) to make this product effective.
What we learned
I learned what it takes to make a project from start to finish. Throughout my coding life, I've always struggled with completing any of my ideas. Having a finished project right now is incredibly rewarding! As I built my game upon research, I personally learned a lot of ways to make myself a more productive person.
What's next for Spaced Out!
In addition to earning people, you also earn coins every time you master a card. Coins can be used to buy people and buildings. This will help make Space Out!'s gameplay even more diverse.
