Inspiration 🌟
What inspired us to create this stylized game came from a desire to build something that could evolve, an open-ended project that wouldn’t lock me into a single idea or mechanic. With the dimensional theme of Spaced Out, we have the freedom to keep things fresh, jumping into ideas from a cyberpunk city to an underwater world, while staying grounded in the core concept.
What it does 🕹️
Spaced Out is a dimension-hopping platform adventure designed for up to four players. Players chart surreal environments and explore the unknown as they jump between realities filled with vibrant visuals and unexpected creatures.
The game currently features three levels and a village area where players can purchase abilities or cosmetics with in world tokens and Meta Credits. Each level is set in a different location within the first dimensional world. These levels offer varied platforming challenges and unique visual styles, introducing players to the feel and mechanics of dimensional travel.
Spaced Out is built around a spirit of connection, curiosity, and hope, inviting players to step into the unknown and discover what lies beyond the familiar.
How we built it 🛠️
Built using Horizon Worlds Desktop Editor with gameplay logic and interactions scripted in TypeScript via Microsoft VS Code and Cursor Leveraged Meta Horizon's AI tools for occasional assistance with optimization and troubleshooting
3D models crafted using ZBrush and Blender Textures and trim sheets designed in Photoshop to maximize visual impact while maintaining performance. A collaborative workflow allowed for rapid iteration and allowed use to bounce ideas off each other.
Music and sound effects sourced and implemented through Horizon Worlds Desktop Editor and Artlist
Mobile-first design approach ensuring accessibility across devices Each level optimized to 4,000–8,000 polygons Strategic use of single trim sheets for key environmental elements like foliage Maintained approximately 40 draw calls per scene for smooth mobile performance
Cross-functional collaboration between designers, developers, and audio specialists Iterative feedback loops using Meta Horizon's built-in collaboration tools
Challenges we ran into ⚠️
Time constraints led us to prioritize core gameplay mechanics, resulting in a polished foundation rather than feature overload Strategic scoping decisions helped us deliver a solid proof-of-concept while identifying exciting expansion opportunities
We're actively continuing development to implement our full creative vision Future updates will add the additional features and mechanics we're passionate about, building on the strong foundation we've established
Accomplishments that we're proud of ✅
Delivered a seamless, bug-free experience with intuitive controls and refined gameplay
Created a fulfilling advancement system that keeps players motivated and invested Implemented a comprehensive abilities and cosmetics store supporting both in-world soft currency and Meta Credits Players can earn rewards through gameplay or purchase premium content, offering flexible customization options
