Spaceborn: A Birth Among the Stars

Inspiration

In 2021 I had a vision that I was having a baby in outer space and watched a story unfold about Earth. At first, I didn’t know what to do with it. I waited several years until I realized, it was a film! I was ready to share it. I tried the traditional Hollywood route, but when the doors didn’t open, I made it myself and brought on the help I needed to bring the vision to life.

**What it does

This film inspires hope. It reminds us that humanity can live from the heart, that we can see each other as one.

How we built it

I started alone, experimenting with MidJourney and Runway. Storyboarding As AI evolved, I added tools like Kling and Leonardo. Once I had the animatic laid out in adobe primere, I brought on an editor/ VFX specialist to refine every detail. We spent 4–5 months reworking almost every shot until the images felt right. Really the tough part is when to stop, right, you can kep refining with ai forever. I had an orginal score cut for the film by 2 time latin gammy winning composer Alean Imbert. With my budget running short I did alot of the sound mixing and effect myself with the help of my gifted husband.

Challenges we faced

The sheer volume of files and file sharing was overwhelming. We used Frame.io to stay organized, but AI often gave us unexpected outputs. Sometimes those surprises nudged the story in new directions. Maintaining character consistency was another hurdle. We solved it by using Flux LoRA models with Leonardo and MidJourney to align the visuals across scenes. I resorted to adobe photo shop and procreate apps to manual input for pulling some shots together.

Accomplishments we’re proud of

The birth scene is the heart of the film. I wanted to capture the feminine, otherworldly power of creation in a way cinema rarely does. We’ve all seen birth portrayed on screen, but I wanted to show its godess like essence. To direct such a human story through non-human, AI-generated characters and still convey deep emotion...was an incredible experience and im proud. I love that many people cry when they see it, they cant even explain why. I think it becasue this whole film followed my pregancy journey through 2 rounds of IVF fertility treatments. It has something so real in the energy of the film.

What we learned

Stay organized. Always. I also learned the importance of asking for help earlier. I self-financed this film, a true labor of love, but next time I’ll lean into collaboration even more.

What’s next for Spaceborn

The short has already won awards (even some before it was fully finished) and been showcased at traditional film screenings this summer. I plan to submit it to festivals, space conferences, and AI summits to spark global conversations about human life beyond Earth. Next I’m now writing the full-length feature version and have started on the trailer.
