Inspiration
Inspired by the video game 'Luckitown', we decided to do our own take on a dice based strategy game. We felt like that challenges of running a space agency would make for good theming, and allow us to teach about NASA in the process.
What it does
A strategy game somewhat resembling Yahtzee, where you bring NASA through many of their milestone missions.
How we built it
We designed the game in Unity, using Blender and paint.net to generate assets.
Challenges we ran into
The physics simulation on the dice was tough to get right. It was a balancing act between actual physics, and getting the dice to settle quickly. We also ran into a lot scenarios where dice would get stuck and never settle, or would fly out of the level.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Creating an interesting strategy game full of complex choices that the player must make to succeed.
What we learned
We learned how to create a 2D game using Unity, as well as what goes into creating a compelling strategy game.
What's next for Space Yahtzee
We're hoping to get a few more educational videos about the various missions featured in game, as well as working a bit more on balancing and art. Also hopefully we can get it on itch.io soon so it can be played easily.
