Inspiration

We were inspired by those movies where the dude tells his girl this constellation reminds me of you, and no one literally knows what they mean. So, we thought that it would be cool to learn more about these constellations. In all seriousness, we all love stars and constellations, so we decided to create an informational program and game about them.

What it does

Space View is a two-part application that gives you an informative map of the constellations and a user-friendly alien-chasing game! The first part of this application is a constellation map where you can learn more about one of the 26 constellations available on the program. The information includes location, history, the stars that are a part of the constellations, and mythological connections. The second part of this application is a fun game called Space Chase where the user has to capture aliens in their UFOs while avoiding dangerous meteors. The user must press the arrow keys to play the game and navigate the screen.

How we built it

We built the program and the website with Java and HTML/CSS.

Challenges we ran into

The challenges that we faced were that this whole project was online and it was harder to communicate with each other with less interaction. It was also harder to collaborate, so we learned more about collaborative coding platforms we never used in the past such as Repl.it. We also had many questions about HTML that we had to research more to learn about. Lastly, in the Java aspect of the game, it was hard to decide how we were going to layout the overall questions, the mapping of the constellations, the order each screen shows up in, and the Java animation.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We learned HTML and CSS after going to one workshop, and we were very proud of ourselves for this. This was our first hackathon, so we are proud to have made this project within this time limit.

What we learned

We learned how to collaboratively code as this was our first hackathon. We also learned the basics of HTML for the website aspect of the code and it was something new that we implemented to our game instructions. We saw the simplicity and efficiency of HTML and were able to use it to make an instructional website.
