Inspiration
SpaceTaxi is an exploration based game where you use your knowledge of physics and orbits to transport passengers as fast as possible. It's hugely inspired by the Crazy Taxi saga, the exploration of Outer Wilds, and the relative accuracy and teaching aspects of Kerbal Space Program.
What it does
Pickup and drop off passengers from landing pads across the solar system as fast as possible! Use your thrusters to propel yourself, mini-map and directional arrows to navigate, and your knowledge of physics and the solar system to get there in a reasonable time. It's harder than it looks.
How we built it
We built the game in Unity using C# and shaderlab
Challenges we ran into
We ran into difficulties merging the huge scale of the solar system with a quicker paced game, and having the model be relatively accurate took lots of calculation.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're extremely proud of our solutions to numerous problems: calculating the forces of gravity and plotting a accurate map, controlling a nimble ship, dynamically moving cameras and informational arrows, and also having passengers be able to mark their destinations.
What we learned
We learned a lot more about orbital physics and the power of vectors.
What's next for Space Taxi
To include Michael Kummer's gravity simulation and improve some algorithms, like calculating time to reach planets.
