Inspiration
As a product designer, I approach XR with a healthy dose of skepticism. I often question whether these technologies are genuinely worth the effort of donning those glasses. However, I’ve always been intrigued by the potential for more utility applications, ones that solve real, everyday problems and add meaningful value to users' lives.
What it does
Space Stylist app will suggest a comprehensive plan for organizing a messy room, including recommendations for products based on clear photos taken by the user. In small apartments, managing and organizing objects can be challenging due to limited space, which can lead to a cluttered living environment that affects the usability of the living area and overall quality of life. Opportunity: Many individuals face challenges in managing space, particularly in urban environments where living areas are often smaller. There is a growing demand for smart, technology-driven solutions that optimize limited space and integrate AI to provide personalized organizational advice. Solution: Develop an app that uses AI to analyze photos of a living room to identify objects, suggest optimal organization strategies, and recommend storage solutions available for purchase (linking directly to Amazon or other retailers).
How I Built It
The project started in Figma, where I designed the core interface and interactions. I then transitioned the prototype into Shapes XR to explore its potential in a spatial environment. As someone relatively new to this platform, my expertise primarily lies in tools like Figma and Adobe. To push myself further, I invested in a Meta Quest to experiment and better understand the possibilities of VR/AR design.
Challenges I Ran Into
Adapting to Shapes XR and working with 3D tools presented a steep learning curve for me. This project required stepping out of my comfort zone, and while I’m aware that my work may not yet be as polished as I’d like, I see this as a stepping stone for future growth.
Accomplishments I'm Proud Of
I successfully transformed a complex product app into a simple, intuitive 3D experience. By doing so, I was able to integrate the app into a living space in a way that feels seamless and approachable.
What I Learned
This experience has shown me how much there is to learn in the field of spatial design. It has expanded my perspective on designing for VR/AR environments and inspired me to continue evolving my creative thinking as I explore new ways to solve problems in this emerging medium.
