Learning
All of our team members had participated in hackathons before. However, we had unique skill sets. Catherine had most of her experience with web dev and UX, while Cyra had recently started working with speech-to-text, and Shivani was more partial to using JavaScript.
Catherine learned how to make a horizontal-scrolling website which she had never done before.
Cyra expanded speech-to-text abilities by reformatting it into a quiz.
Shivani learned a completely new technology with Twilio!
Inspiration
We were inspired by the Education and Space tracks! We wanted to combine both themes and create an educational site dedicated to exploring our local planetary neighborhood-- the Solar System!
What it does
Space Slides works as a horizontally-based scrolling website. You can scroll through eight different "slides" for each of the eight planets in our solar system. You can learn quick facts about each planet, along with direct access to Google Cloud or NASA related resources.
We also offer a Twilio based application for "asking an expert" about details on each planet.
Finally, at the end of the Space Slides website, we provide a speech-based quiz to review information throughout the Space Slides website. Rather than a simple click-based quiz, the user answers by saying their answers out loud. This is more effective because it reinforces information through kinesthetic and auditory learning.
How we built it
We built our application on repl.it using HTML, CSS, and JS. We also used Google Cloud for Firebase and Google Maps/Space technology. Twilio was used for communication and "Ask an Expert" features.
Some CSS adaptations from other resources are cited in our code (linked below).
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of our finished product and the UI of the overall site.
What we learned
We learned a lot about combining different software together! We also learned a lot about space along the way!
What's next for Space Slides
We definitely want to include more animations throughout the website, like meteors or satellites! We also want to make our UI more responsive on differently sized devices.
