Inspiration
The inspiration behind Space Math Adventure came from the need to make daily math practice more enjoyable and interactive. I wanted to create a game that motivates players to regularly practice essential math skills—like division, multiplication, addition, and subtraction—while exploring a captivating space-themed world. The game was designed to provide a fun alternative to traditional math drills, encouraging players to improve their math skills in a dynamic, game-like environment.
What it does
Space Math Adventure is a math practice game that helps players work on core arithmetic operations such as division, multiplication, addition, and subtraction. It includes a variety of levels, each focusing on different skills, and also offers a mixed mode where players can tackle all operations in a single challenge. The game features a Rapid Fire Ship mode, where players solve as many problems as possible in a limited time, adding excitement and urgency to their practice sessions. The game is designed to be played on a daily basis to help users steadily improve their math proficiency.
How we built it
I built Space Math Adventure using Unity for the core game mechanics and visuals. The game logic, written in C#, handles problem generation, player input, and scoring. I structured the game with multiple levels, each progressively more challenging to keep players engaged as they advance through different math operations. Rapid Fire Ship mode required special optimization to ensure smooth, fast-paced gameplay while keeping the math problems random and appropriately difficult.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was ensuring that the math problems in each level remained balanced and challenging while still being approachable for players of different skill levels. It was also challenging to design the Rapid Fire Ship mode to work without any performance issues, especially given the fast pace. Additionally, integrating a fun space theme while keeping the educational focus intact required careful thought and design.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I'm proud of the way Space Math Adventure combines fun and learning. The space theme makes the game visually appealing, while the progression through levels and the Rapid Fire Ship mode make the practice sessions exciting and engaging. I’m also proud of creating a smooth and functional gameplay experience, especially in the rapid-fire round, which adds a layer of excitement to daily math practice.
What we learned
Building this game taught me valuable lessons about balancing fun and education in game design. I learned how to create levels that challenge players while keeping them motivated to continue learning. I also gained experience in optimizing real-time game mechanics for fast-paced modes like Rapid Fire. This project strengthened my skills in game development, especially in combining educational content with an engaging player experience.
What's next for Space Math Adventure
Next, I plan to expand Space Math Adventure by adding more complex math topics and advanced levels for players who want to push their skills further. I also want to introduce new gameplay features, such as leaderboards and rewards, to motivate daily practice. Finally, I’m considering making the game available on more platforms and devices, so more people can benefit from it as an enjoyable way to improve their math skills.
