Inspiration
With this website, we hope to shed light on some of the women who looked up at the sky and decided to reach for the stars. Women are not often given acknowledgment and appreciation for their contributions to space exploration, and we want to help change that. Although there are countless female engineers, astronauts, mathematicians, etc., who contribute to space exploration and deserve recognition, we were only able to showcase a handful throughout history. We tried our best to choose a racially diverse group of female trailblazers because as fellow women of color in STEM, we believe that anybody—regardless of gender or skin color—can make a difference in the science community.
What it does
This is a simple 3-page website with embedded images and gifs. There is a home page, a page for astronauts, and a page for programmers. These pages feature short biographies of the women featured. The images contain links to the respective astronaut/programmer's Wikipedia page.
How we built it
We split the work into research and coding. Nilda and Esme researched and wrote the text while Annie coded in HTML and CSS. All team members collaborated on the visuals and design layout.
Challenges we ran into
This is our first hackathon, so we were definitely overwhelmed and confused at the start. We weren't sure how to approach the #BuildingBridges theme with our limited experience. We had trouble gauging what was a realistic idea given the time and technical constraints.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
However, we're proud that we did manage to put a project together, even though it is very basic. Although making a functional and presentable hack seemed intimidating at first, we gained more confidence as it slowly came together. Our website is responsive on browsers and is aesthetically appealing, and we are glad we stuck through the uncertainty because we ended up having a lot of fun researching and collaborating!
What we learned
Annie learned new CSS features (such as resizing images and aligning text), Nilda learned how to pitch a hack, and Esme learned what exactly a hackathon is. All three members also learned about the accomplishments of the awesome women featured on the website!
What's next for Women in Space, A Tribute Website
To improve our website, we will try to incorporate div sections and flexboxes to make CSS coding neater. We also want to add more interactive features on the website and more biographies!
