Inspiration

We wanted to promote sustainability in the form of a video game so we came up with Space Debris Cleaner in order to fit the theme!

What it does

This game allows you to control a ship with A or D to go left or right and shoot falling debris! If a falling piece of trash manages to touch you, you get sent back to the start screen. You can view all your collected trash in the gallery!

How we built it

We built this game using Godot for it's simplicity, built-in functions, and streamlined processes. We used git for version control.

Challenges we ran into

Some challenges we ran into were figuring out were dealing with merge conflicts, learning Godot for the first time including how nodes interact with each other through signals, when to make a scene, how to restrain player movement to camera. Our game broke 3 hours before the deadline and the start button stopped working aswell as debris stopped spawning, putting us under immense stress.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Managing to produce a functional game and post it on the website within 24 hours. None of us have game development experience and were well out of our comfort zone but we're very happy that we managed to make something.

What we learned

We learned how to manage merge conflicts, manage multiple scenes, allow their nodes to connect via signals, develop collision recognition, and we learned how to work under pressure as our game broke before the deadline.

What's next for Space Debris Cleaning Game

We would like to see the game definitely see smoother transitions as debris are destroyed and as the player dies. We also wanted to implement a point system with milestones that rewarded players with images from NASA's API as an addition to the gallery.
