Inspiration
I have always had a love for video games, and so I have been following the Computer Science pathway in order to attempt to be able to create video games myself one day. This particular game was developed with the game Geometry Dash in mind, hence the similar name.
How we built it
This game was created in GameMaker, as my first real attempt at using the software outside of simple tutorials.
Challenges we ran into
While GameMaker is extremely intuitive, the ways to properly connect it to GitHub certainly were not, which resulted in at least 2 hours of work wasted due to problems with commit syncing and removal. Additionally, the process of creating the level designs that exist took much longer than expected, meaning many ideas for game mechanics went completely unused in the finished product. On top of this, this also meant that I had to work with many rather crude textures, as I am not great with graphics and needed to focus elsewhere to get to a product I would consider playable within the time frame.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I am proud that I was able to put this all together, from mixing songs for each individual level to hand-crafting every level myself, I am fairly happy with what some of my efforts produced.
What we learned
Next time I tackle something like this, I most certainly want to get the help of someone more inclined with Graphic Design during the project, as the visuals are the most significant weakness of Space Dash. Even more people than that would be lovely, as the more people on the team the more game can get developed.
What's next for Space Dash
A massive graphics overhaul, for sure. I certainly believe that the level layouts were done fairly well, however there is so much potential for additional mechanics to add to the game that I was unable to bring to the table.
