Inspiration
Space Control started from a simple fantasy: what if you could step into an animated sci-fi comedy show. We love series like Futurama and Rick & Morty and wanted to bring that kind of character-driven comedy to VR, where you can actually be part of the chaos instead of just watching it.
What it does
Space Control is a narrative VR comedy simulation game where you’re abducted by an intergalactic corporation and forced to work ridiculous gigs on a space station. You do wacky jobs, from alien daycare to soda-factory shift work together with your NPC crewmates. The updated build focuses on making that experience feel more natural, physical, and immersive with hand tracking and the Audio SDK.
How we built it
We’re building Space Control in Unity for the Meta Quest platform, with a small team at MoonMonster Studios. During the competition period we focused on two major upgrades:
- Hand tracking: redesigning core interactions so players can poke, grab, pinch and gesture without controllers.
- Meta Audio SDK: improving spatial audio, occlusion and mixing to make the game feel more alive and reactive.
Challenges we ran into
We mainly had issues making sure hand tracking worked with our pre-existing tech stack. Finding standard gestures was a challenge and for some we had to choose our own.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The biggest part came from the ambitious scope of the game and learning about character development, writing and designing gameplay with story. But for this we're proud that hand tracking works really well and feels pretty natural in the game.
What we learned
The main thing we learned is that it does take some time to implement hand tracking put it is very doable and increase your immersion a lot. There's a lot of other options we immediately would want to do for our game and letting characters react on it, but our time is limited sadly enough.
What's next for Space Control
Our plan is to launch Space Control on Meta Quest around March–April 2026. Keep an eye out for an official announcement and be sure to buy the game to support us!
Handtracking gestures
- Grab: Normal grabbing gesture
- ForceGrab: Do a half grab gesture first to show the circle, then close hand completely to forcegrab
- Trigger: Move index finger like how you would with a controller
- Teleport: Make a finger gun with palm upwards, then bring index finger and thumb together until they touch
- Snapturn: Hold hand like you would shake someone's hand, then bring index finger and thumb together until they touch
- Pause/Unpause: Same as snapturn, but with index finger and thumb pointing towards your face
