Inspiration
We were inspired by the fast-paced action of games like “Tag" and "Last Man Standing" modes in popular VR titles and the intense survival mechanics of battle royale games. The concept of upgrading a weapon (sword) during the match adds a layer of strategy and progression, similar to roguelike elements. The space setting allows for creative arena designs with low-gravity effects and sci-fi obstacles.
What it does
SPACE CHASE is a multiplayer VR game where players compete in an arena that gradually shrinks. Players start with a basic sword and must tag others to earn points and upgrades. The goal is to be the last player surviving. Key features include:
- Dynamic Arenas: Multiple space-themed maps with interactive elements like low-gravity and obstacles.
- Shrinking Boundary: A force field that progressively reduces the playable area, forcing players into close-quarters combat.
- VR Optimization: Designed for room-scale and standing play, with intuitive motion controls for movement and sword combat.
How we built it
- Engine: Built using the Meta Horizon Desktop Editor with a focus on VR performance.
- Art & Assets:
- 3D models created in Blender (spaceships, asteroids, sci-fi structures).
- Primitives and textures generated with AI tools.
- Design:
- Arenas designed to encourage verticality and strategic movement
- Sword physics tuned for satisfying "tag" feedback
Challenges we ran into
- Sword Combat: Making sword tagging feel fair and accurate. We iterated on hit detection (using sphere casting) and visual feedback to avoid false positives.
- Shrinking Boundary: Creating a visually clear but non-intrusive boundary effect that gradually forces players together without abrupt unfair eliminations.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Immersive VR Mechanics: The sword combat might feel "intuitive and thrilling," with the upgrading system adding motivation.
- Performance: Maintaining a stable FPS on Quest 2/3 despite complex arenas and 4-8 player matches.
- Dynamic Maps: Our system keeps gameplay matches unpredictable.
What we learned
- VR-Specific Design: How to balance intense action with comfort.
- Making Cross Platform: Making mechanics feel smooth allowing for gameplay on a variety of devices
What's next for SPACE CHASE
- New Game Modes: Team-based capture-the-flag and "Infection" (1 vs. All) variants.
- AI Bots: Offline practice modes with adjustable difficulty.
