Inspiration

My inspiration for this world comes from a lifelong fascination with the space, a passion for the boundless mysteries of the universe and thrilling possibility that humanity is only at the beginning of its cosmic journey. I want to capture that feeling, that rush of wonder, curiosity, and adventure and transport players into a VR universe where the dream of space travel becomes real. A world where every glowing nebula, distant planet, and drifting comet whispers the promise of discovery.

What it does

You start out in small spaceship with several sections for you to hangout with your friends and explore space. You can relax and explore the ship, interact with several gadgets such as a spacesuit and navigating the ship to other planets. There will be several surprises and easter eggs through out the universe to keep it fun and replay able.

How we built it

Initially, I intended to create the skymap using the internal AI system in order to fulfill one of the contest requirements. While the tool produced satisfactory results for standard skyboxes, I quickly encountered its limitations. As a result, I chose to build a custom skymap for the space environment entirely from scratch.

In addition, I implemented simple animations using TypeScript and generated a moon for Earth with AI to meet the remaining contest criteria. Although I have many plans and enhancements to further develop this project into a rich adventure and simulation experience, I began the contest later than expected and ultimately ran out of time to complete all of my planned updates.

Despite this, I am hopeful that the current experience demonstrates the vision and potential of the project and will be strong enough to be considered for the winning entry.

Challenges we ran into

I encountered several challenges throughout the development process, particularly when working with the Ai tools and producing a sufficient number of assets for the project. Moving forward, I plan to supplement my workflow by purchasing additional assets and continuing to explore asset generation through Ai to enhance both efficiency and quality.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am particularly proud of the spaceship model, planet designs, and supporting assets I created for this project. Although I was unable to implement all of them within the available timeframe, I plan to integrate the remaining elements in future updates.

What we learned

I found the Ai system to be impressive and full of potential, though it still requires further refinement to support consistent production use. I also gained valuable experience in implementing large-scale assets and managing multiple material types within a unified model.

What's next for Space Cadet Depot

There are many planned upgrades focused on expanding interactivity. Future updates will introduce space travel to additional planets, along with fully interactive flight controls for users to operate. The interior environments will also be further developed, including furnished rooms inspired by futuristic space design and interactive NPCs to enhance immersion and world engagement.

posted an update

I'm very disappointed in Meta Dev enviroment. There's always some kind of bug and artifacts I have to deal with when uploading my environment. My Models render fine in blender but when I upload them to the Meta horizon Editor they come out like crap with these strange artifacts. This delayed my entries for the contest. This is very unfair and frustraiting.
