Inspiration

We were inspired by Flappy Bird and Space Invaders!

What it does

The player uses the left, right, up, and down keys to control the spaceship and avoid the asteroids for as long as possible.

How we built it

We used pygame in Python to develop our game. We began with creating the background and then the player avatar. We then created the asteroids, the losing screen, the scoring system, and the high score system before finally creating a main menu screen.

Challenges we ran into

One of our major challenges was becoming familiar with Python and pygame since not all of our team members knew how to code in Python and the ones that did had to refresh their memory. Those of us who knew how to use Python and pygame taught the others as we coded.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

One specific accomplishment we're proud of is making the asteroids appear scattered (thanks Anthony!). Moreover, for some of us, our biggest accomplishment was learning Python and pygame in the span of a day. Overall, we're proud of the end result as a whole, not only because the game plays out like we envisioned it, but also because this was our first hackathon and we feel that we accomplished quite a lot given a short amount of time.

What we learned

We were able to polish our understanding of pygame and some team members were able to learn and use Python for the first time. We also learned how to work as a group to establish and implement ideas, manage our time wisely, and divide up the work.

What's next for Space Adventure

As we develop more ideas, we hope to implement them further into this game. Some ideas we thought of include powerups to slow down the asteroids, blasters or guns, and multipliers to the score.
