Inspiration

As a home chef obsessed with restaurant-quality sous vide results, I grew frustrated with scattered, inconsistent cooking guides. I saw fellow home cooks struggling to nail doneness levels or waste money on ill-suited equipment—so I set out to build a one-stop solution that combines precision, usability, and real-world expertise.

What it does

SousVide Guide is a mobile app that delivers accurate sous vide parameters for 200+ ingredients (adjustable by doneness), a background-running smart timer, step-by-step searing instructions, and curated equipment recommendations. It offers free access to core features and a premium tier for full access.

How we built it

I started by researching industry-standard sous vide temperature/time data, then structured the app’s core pages (ingredient database, timer, searing guide). I coded native iOS/Android versions with Swift/Kotlin, used SQLite for ingredient data storage, Firebase for backend logic, and Stripe for subscription processing. I designed the UI with Figma to prioritize readability and kitchen-friendly navigation.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest hurdle was ensuring the timer ran reliably in the background across devices—mobile OS restrictions required creative use of hardware APIs and push notification workarounds. I also struggled to balance free/premium feature access without alienating free users, iterating on the paywall logic multiple times to strike a fair balance.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Curating a 200+ ingredient database with verified sous vide parameters, building a timer that works seamlessly in the background, and creating a searing guide that demystifies post-sous vide finishing for home cooks. The app’s intuitive doneness selector (auto-adjusting temps/times) is a user favorite.

What we learned

I deepened my understanding of mobile background processes and subscription monetization logic. I also learned to translate complex cooking knowledge into accessible, app-friendly UX—bridging culinary expertise with technical implementation. Most importantly, I learned to prioritize core user needs (precision, reliability) over feature bloat.

What's next for this project

I plan to add regional ingredient variations, integrate user-requested custom timer functionality, and expand equipment recommendations with 2026 market updates. I’m also exploring partnerships with sous vide equipment brands to offer exclusive user discounts and expand the searing guide with video tutorials (a top user request).
