Inspiration
Cooking videos are ten minutes of talking for two minutes of recipe, and you can't scroll back with flour on your hands.
What it does
Sous turns any YouTube cooking video into a clean, hands-free slideshow. Paste a link and the slides build live: ingredients first, then one slide per step. Say "next" to move on; every step is read aloud. On the iPhone Duo, open it up to see the guide and slideshow side by side.
How we built it
SwiftUI on iOS 27.1 and the iPhone Duo simulator, built with Bitrig and Claude Code. Supadata fetches the transcript, an LLM streams the slides line by line, and on-device speech recognition handles voice commands.
Challenges we ran into
Setting up the Xcode beta and Duo simulator took time, and the AI kept inventing ingredients, and once a whole chicken recipe from a chess video. We fixed it by requiring evidence from the transcript for every ingredient.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Slides that appear live, true hands-free cooking, and one of the first apps built for the iPhone Duo, all in under four hours.
What we learned
AI needs to be forced to prove what it says, and a wrong picture is worse than no picture.
What's next for Sous
Saving recipes, scaling servings, and support for TikTok and Instagram cooking videos.
