About the Project

Inspiration

SousChef was inspired by a simple, everyday problem: people often look into a full fridge and still feel like there is nothing to cook. With Thanksgiving approaching and learning that nearly 40% of food in the United States is wasted each year, we wanted to build something that reduces waste, lowers decision fatigue, and makes cooking enjoyable again.

How We Built It

We built SousChef as an AI-powered cooking assistant that generates personalized recipes and meal plans based on the ingredients users already have. Our system combines computer vision and natural language processing to interpret ingredient lists and match them with recipe structures. We also integrated Fish Audio to deliver natural, hands-free voice guidance, making the experience feel like cooking with a real chef.

Challenges

One major challenge was achieving reliable ingredient detection and ensuring that recipe generation felt structured rather than random. Integrating voice interaction smoothly with the cooking workflow required careful iteration and testing to maintain a seamless user experience.

What We Learned

We learned how to blend AI models, voice systems, and user-centered design into one cohesive cooking experience. More importantly, we discovered how effective AI can be in solving everyday problems and helping reduce real-world food waste.
