Inspiration
Sous was inspired by our frustration with the fragmented and inefficient experience of home cooking. From juggling multiple recipe sites to buying niche ingredients that go to waste after one meal, we realized that cooking at home—something that should be fun—often feels like a chore. As engineers who love to cook, we saw an opportunity to streamline the process using technology.
What it does
Sous takes the hassle out of home cooking by managing the tedious parts—meal planning, shopping list creation, and recipe organization—so you can focus on what really matters: cooking, enjoying your meals, and sharing them with others. With a digital pantry to track what you have and smart meal planning that reuses ingredients across multiple recipes, Sous helps you save time, reduce food waste, and cut down on grocery costs. Every interaction feeds into a personalized search engine that learns your tastes and recommends recipes tailored to your unique preferences.
How we built it
We began by mapping out the core frustrations of the home cooking experience and identifying areas where optimization could make a difference. We used Python and JavaScript to build a responsive web app, integrating a recipe database, ingredient tracking, and a digital pantry system. For the backend, we designed a data pipeline that collects user habits to improve recommendations and power our analytics offering for grocers.
Challenges we ran into
We’re currently in the design and planning stage of Sous. We started by conducting user interviews and mapping out the entire home cooking journey. Using those insights, we created wireframes and system diagrams to outline the key features: a digital pantry, optimized shared-ingredient recipe suggestions, and a streamlined grocery list generator. We’ve also defined the technical architecture and data structure needed to support personalized recommendations and a scalable insights dashboard for grocers.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud of the depth of research and intentional design that’s gone into Sous so far. We've interviewed a wide range of home cooks to uncover pain points and validate our concept, then translated those insights into detailed user journeys and wireframes. We also had the opportunity to present our vision to a panel of entrepreneurs and received enthusiastic feedback about the problem we’re solving and the potential of our platform. Their input helped us refine our value proposition and strengthened our confidence in the direction we’re taking.
What we learned
Through this process, we’ve learned that building a great product is only one part of starting a successful business. From defining our market and business model to developing a go-to-market strategy, we've gained hands-on experience with what it takes to turn an idea into a venture. Talking to users taught us how to identify real problems, while pitching to entrepreneurs showed us the importance of clearly communicating value.
What's next for Sous
We’re excited to keep pushing Sous forward. Our next steps include continuing to refine our designs, validate new features with users, and begin development. Our goal is to build an app we’re truly proud of—one that brings joy back to home cooking by solving real, everyday problems. We’ll also explore early partnerships and start laying the groundwork for a pilot launch to test Sous in real kitchens.
