Inspiration
Soupkeepers was inspired by our love for cozy games, lighthearted humor, and classic tower defense mechanics. We wanted to create a strategy game that feels welcoming rather than stressful. Instead of defending against evil invaders, we imagined a world where hungry forest creatures are simply attracted by the delicious aroma of Grandma Mushroom's cooking. This idea allowed us to combine strategy with warmth, personality, and charm.
What it does
Soupkeepers is a cozy tower defense game where players help Grandma Mushroom protect her Soup Pot from hungry woodland visitors.
Players:
Build custom maze paths. Place towers strategically. Collect ingredients from defeated creatures. Activate powerful Soup Powers. Unlock new recipes through Grandma's Recipe Book. Defeat humorous bosses and celebrate around the campfire.
The goal isn't just to surviveβit's to help Grandma finish dinner.
How we built it
We approached the project by first defining a strong design vision through four connected artifacts:
Game Design Document. Player Journey Map. Visual Concept Package. Production Plan.
We focused on creating systems that reinforce the cozy identity of the game:
Maze building. Living Soup System. Recipe-based progression. Friendly and humorous enemies. Strong visual consistency centered around Grandma Mushroom.
Every feature was designed to support creativity, replayability, and accessibility.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was balancing traditional tower defense mechanics with a cozy atmosphere.
We constantly asked ourselves:
How do we create challenge without making the game feel stressful? How do we make enemies memorable without turning them into villains? How do we maintain consistency across all four submission artifacts?
Another challenge was scope management. We had many ideas, but we intentionally focused on building a strong core experience first.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Creating a unique "hungry, not evil" philosophy for enemies. Designing the Living Soup System that turns ingredients into gameplay. Building a cohesive world around Grandma Mushroom. Maintaining consistency across all documents and visual assets. Creating a strategy game that feels warm, charming, and approachable.
Most importantly, we're proud that Soupkeepers feels like a complete world rather than just a collection of mechanics.
What we learned
Throughout development, we learned the importance of:
Prioritizing a clear core loop. Keeping scope realistic. Making every system support the game's theme. Designing for player emotion, not just mechanics. Building coherence across design, visuals, and progression.
We also learned that simplicity often creates stronger experiences than excessive complexity.
What's next for Soupkeepers
Future plans include:
Additional maps and recipes. Seasonal events. More heroes and towers. Expanded cottage customization. Rare visitors and special encounters. Endless challenge modes. Cozy side activities such as fishing, gardening, and photography. Community events and cooperative goals.
Our long-term vision is to continue expanding Soupkeepers while preserving its cozy identity and sense of charm.
