SoundScape
Where every local dollar creates a ripple of community good
Inspiration
Local businesses are the heart of Washington's economy, however they are struggling to compete with large, data-driven platforms that offer automated marketing, dynamic rewards, and personalized customer engagement. Credit union members want to support local businesses, but they rarely see the real impact of their spending. They miss opportunities to discover local perks, while the credit union misses out on connecting both sides of its ecosystem.
We questioned: What if every transaction could become a visible act of community building?
SoundScape turns everyday financial activity into shared, trackable community growth.
What It Does
SoundScape is an AI-powered local commerce ecosystem built into Sound Credit Union’s app. It connects members and small businesses through three core features:
- SoundMap: An interactive map showing nearby partnered businesses, live offers, and real-time neighborhood impact.
- Smart Business Assistant: An AI dashboard that helps merchants generate offers, automatically write marketing copy, and understand spending trends using anonymized CU data.
- Personalized Reward Engine: Members receive hyper-local offers based on their behavior, plus a Community Impact Score: Shows members how their spending habits can support the local economy.
Hackathon Output:
Mobile web app with an interactive SoundMap prototype, AI-generated merchant offer demo, and working reward logic simulation.
How We Built It
- Frontend: HTML/CSS, React
- Backend: Node.js service simulating transactions, rewards, and impact scoring
- Design: Figma Make, with Sound Credit Union color palettes
- Data: Generated synthetic transaction data
Challenges We Ran Into
- Designing a data-driven system that still protects member privacy and trust
- Scoping for two very different users (members and merchants) within hackathon time limits
- Making “community impact” both quantifiable and emotionally meaningful in the UI
Accomplishments We’re Proud Of
- A functional, judge-ready prototype of the SoundMap experience
- AI-powered merchant dashboard that generates marketing text from one prompt
- Reward and impact engine proving feasibility of personal and community benefit tracking
- A narrative and visual identity that reframes banking as shared local progress
What We Learned
- Community fintech succeeds when financial value and emotional value reinforce each other
- AI is most useful to small businesses when it removes complexity, not when it adds features
- Users respond more strongly to collective metrics (ex: “Tacoma spent +$5,432 locally this month”) than typical cashback-only UX
- Credit unions are uniquely positioned to become hubs of local economic ecosystems
