Sharing links is annoying. Friends do it through Facebook and colleagues do it through email, but how do you do it to a large audience like a classroom, auditorium, or conference room? You can use bit.ly or another URL shortener, you can use shoutkey, but these all require the users to type, there are typos, and it's just obnoxious to share a link by making people type it out.
Welcome to Sound Off, a desktop application that allows you to share short bits of data through a series of beeps. Share links, keys, or any short phrase in a few seconds through a few short steps:
1) the sender enters a link 2) the receiver clicks "receive" 3) the sender clicks "send" 4) a few seconds later the receiver has a copy of the link
Sound Off has some interesting features. There is a filter to listen to only the pitches created by the Sound Off app, and ignore other sounds like surrounding voices. The program senses the start of the series of beeps on its own, and senses the end on its own as well- your data is displayed as soon as it is received. It's written in Java, so its cross platform- our demo demonstrates sending a link from a Windows PC to a Mac.
Eventually this can be expanded to allow users to share contact info, and become more integrated with desktops, making link sharing an even faster process.
