Inspiration

I built Sound Mind because I was tired of my negative thinking. I would get stuck looping the same thought, over and over, sending me into a spiral that affected my attitude, words and actions. They were not always dramatic either, just an accumulation of the usual thoughts that, over time, influence what you believe about yourself.

As a Christian, I knew what the Bible says about this. Renew your mind. Take every thought captive. Guard your heart. Watch your words. But I had not allowed those verses to become a way of living. They were not what I truly believed about myself. I was still living from an old mindset, built up over years of negative experiences, opinions and fears. Those would trigger the thoughts, and eventually my belief about who I was, which was not how God saw me.

I came across a couple of posts online about neuroplasticity. I eventually read the books by Dr Lee Warren, a Christian neurosurgeon, and Dr Caroline Leaf. That is how I started to understand how neuroplasticity and the Bible can work hand in hand. Whatever you dwell on, focus on, rehearse in your mind, and then speak out loud only strengthens that connection in the brain, and the belief gets stronger. The Bible was already telling me to renew my mind. Neuroplasticity gave me practical steps to follow through with it. Instead of reading the verse and moving on, living it out and believing it was the next step toward freedom from those patterns.

I wanted an app that could make this simple enough to practice daily without feeling like another chore. Notice the thought, replace it with what God says about you, meditate on it, pray about it, and declare it out loud; all ways of helping rewire your mind until the truth is not only familiar but believed. I'm not a developer, so I have had this idea for a while. My work is digital marketing. Building software myself was never an option until AI.

What it does

Sound Mind is a simple daily practice for Christians who want Scripture to renew their minds.

The core feature is the six-step Thought Capture process: Breathe, Notice, Examine, Surrender, Replace, Declare. That thought becomes a project you can practice daily until the negative thought no longer runs the show. You can add a home screen widget that shows the daily declaration.

This kind of change takes time, which is why the app is only a tool. It is not a replacement for a relationship with God. He does the real work in you, not an app.

If you are not in the mood to work on a thought project, there are supporting practices that still shift your focus and bring peace:

  • themed Scripture playlists
  • guided meditations
  • a gratitude wall
  • a new declaration each morning that you can speak out loud, save, or customise

It runs on a 7-day free trial, then a monthly or yearly subscription.

How I built it

I built it mainly with Claude Code: React Native and Expo for the app, Supabase for the backend, RevenueCat for subscriptions, and ElevenLabs for the audio.

There was a large learning curve. Endless cycles of QA, edits, script writing, declaration writing, bugs and UX issues I had to make a better plan for. I am not a programmer who used AI as a shortcut. I am someone who could finally build the thing I had been dreaming of for years, and I am glad I stayed picky about what made it into the app.

I'd never set up app payments before. RevenueCat is what I used for the trial and the monthly and yearly plans.

Challenges I ran into

The hardest work was the content. I did not want generic AI-written material, so most of it was written by me and checked strictly against Scripture.

The audio was its own problem. Takes that did not sound human, words pronounced wrong, tone and pacing and volume drifting. All of that had to stay consistent and believable. Curating it took longer than building the app itself.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

Sound Mind is finally on the App Store. It took much longer than I thought it would, but I am proud of the first version.

I hope it helps people do the simple thing I needed: catch the negative thought that is doing the damage, and stay with the truth until they believe it.

What I learned

Quality over quantity. Most of the work was deciding what did not belong in the app.

What's next for Sound Mind

Getting the app in front of people is the next step. I am hoping to raise funds for marketing campaigns and use my digital marketing background to do it.
