Building Noise Maker: Bedtime Fan Sound

Inspiration

I’ve always been fascinated by how soundscapes can help calm the mind, aid in sleep, or improve focus. For years, I’ve used white noise and nature sounds to unwind, and I wanted to create something that would allow others to experience that same peace. I was also looking for a side project to gain experience with App Store Optimization (ASO), so the idea for Noise Maker came naturally — an app that lets users easily mix various sound effects for relaxation, sleep, or focus. Given my goal of mastering ASO as a seasoned iOS developer, I welcomed the intense competition in the space. It provides a valuable opportunity to hone my skills and better understand how to stand out in a crowded market.

What it does

Noise Maker is designed to be a simple and intuitive app where users can mix different sounds like white noise, nature soundscapes, and ambient noises to create their perfect sound environment. Whether it's for sleep, relaxation, or boosting focus, the app provides a clean, easy-to-use interface that gets right to the point: helping you mix sounds effortlessly.

How I built it

I built Noise Maker using SwiftUI for its minimalist and responsive design. The goal was to keep the app as simple as possible, so users could mix sounds quickly without getting overwhelmed by complex features. I also integrated Lottie animations to enhance the visual experience, while ensuring smooth transitions and interactions. During the process, I used Astro for ASO, learning how to optimize the app’s visibility on the App Store through careful keyword research and competitive analysis.

Challenges I ran into

The biggest challenge was finding the right balance between simplicity and functionality. I didn’t want to overcomplicate the user interface, but it also had to be feature-rich enough to serve its purpose. Another challenge was mastering ASO — understanding how to optimize keywords, descriptions, and app listings to ensure Noise Maker could stand out in a crowded market.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I’m proud of the simplicity and clarity of the design. I managed to create an app that focuses on one thing — helping users relax through sound — without overloading them with options. The positive feedback from testers on the user experience was a huge win. Additionally, I’m happy with the ASO work I’ve done, which will hopefully help Noise Maker gain visibility in the App Store.

What I learned

Throughout this journey, I learned the importance of focus when building a product. It’s easy to get caught up in adding more features, but sometimes, less is more. I also gained valuable insights into ASO — how crucial it is for an app's success and how much goes into making sure users can discover your product.

What's next for Noise Maker: Bedtime Fan Sound

Moving forward, I plan to continue optimizing Noise Maker based on user feedback and ongoing ASO learnings. Future updates might include more sound options, deeper customization, widgets and perhaps features for specific soundscapes tailored to different activities like meditation or study. I’m excited to see how users will embrace Noise Maker, and I’m eager to continue refining the app to make it the best tool for sleep and relaxation. They have the option to leave a feature request in the app without writing an email.
