Inspiration
In today’s digital world, we store our lives online—photos, messages, financial accounts, memories, and personal stories.
But when someone passes away, all of this is often lost, locked behind passwords, or scattered across platforms.
Families are left not only struggling to access important information, but also missing something deeper—the voice, presence, and guidance of their loved one.
We wanted to solve a simple but powerful question:
What happens to your digital life when you're gone?
What it does
SoulVault AI is a digital legacy platform that allows users to securely preserve their digital life and pass it on in a meaningful, human way.
Users can:
- Store digital assets (accounts, credentials, instructions) securely in an encrypted vault
- Assign trusted beneficiaries with controlled access levels
- Record personal memories as text, voice, and video messages
- Train an AI model to replicate their personality, tone, and thinking
When the user becomes inactive, the system activates a secure inheritance protocol, granting beneficiaries access to assigned data.
But beyond access — SoulVault AI creates something deeper:
- Beneficiaries can interact with an AI version of their loved one, trained on real memories and conversations
- Future feature: AI video calling, allowing users to see and talk to a realistic digital representation
- Scheduled memory delivery for special life events (e.g., birthdays, weddings)
This transforms digital inheritance into an emotional and human experience, not just a technical transfer.
How we built it
We developed SoulVault AI as a full-stack web application using:
- Frontend: Next.js (App Router), Tailwind CSS
- Backend: Supabase (PostgreSQL, Authentication, Row-Level Security)
- AI Integration: Google Gemini API for memory-aware conversational AI
- Deployment: Vercel (frontend) and scalable backend services
Key implementations include:
- Encrypted handling of sensitive data
- Beneficiary-based access control with secure data isolation
- Context-aware AI chat using stored memories and personality training
- Simulation system to demonstrate inactivity-triggered inheritance
The system is designed to scale toward advanced AI features like voice cloning and video avatars.
Challenges we ran into
- Designing secure storage and controlled access for sensitive data
- Making AI responses feel human and emotional instead of robotic
- Structuring relational data properly instead of unsafe JSON usage
- Building a UI that feels emotional and meaningful, not just functional
- Balancing MVP development with a broader product vision
Accomplishments that we’re proud of
- Built a functional end-to-end MVP with real user flows
- Created an AI system that responds using memory-based context
- Designed a product combining security + emotional intelligence
- Implemented secure beneficiary-based inheritance logic
- Delivered a concept that extends beyond utility into human connection
What we learned
- Technology alone is not enough—emotion and purpose matter
- AI becomes powerful when trained on real human experiences
- Trust and security are critical for sensitive applications
- Great products solve both practical and emotional problems
