Light—it's the essence of life, the driving force behind everything. Too little of it, and the world is gripped by cold darkness; too much, and it burns, leaving us scorched and unsettled.

In our modern cities, light pollution has become a silent epidemic, flooding the streets and skies, making it impossible to see the stars. But perhaps there’s something deeper happening. Could the excess light in our urban spaces symbolize a more profound imbalance within us? A pollution of the energy within us? As we explored the theme of light for this project, we began to ask ourselves: Is this inner pollution directly or indirectly affecting our mental and physical health?

From the wisdom of ancient traditions—like Gnosticism and Buddhism—to the cutting-edge sciences of biophotonics and quantum mechanics, human beings have often been described as energy, as light. And like light itself, our inner radiance can affect those around us. Some shine so brightly that it blinds those nearby, causing confusion and disorientation. Others dim so much that the coldness spreads, leaving their communities in mental darkness. Then there are those whose light is balanced, offering warmth, clarity, and joy to everyone they touch.

But what happens when our inner light falters? Depression, anxiety, stress—they’re all shadows of this imbalance, and the way we live our lives only deepens or dissipates the gloom. In cities, the lack of green spaces, fresh food, and opportunities to connect often turns us inward, trapping us in cycles of unhealthy habits. We forget that mental and physical health are inseparable—two sides of the same coin.

This brings us to the "Soulshine Grid."

Imagine a light map, but not one that tracks electricity. Instead, it measures the light within us—our kindness, empathy, and mindfulness. A map that captures how we interact with the world and each other. The Soulshine Grid doesn’t track streetlights or power lines; it tracks acts of generosity, moments of support, and expressions of love. It reminds us that each of us carries a unique light, and together, we shape the brightness of our communities.

When we volunteer, when we extend a hand to a neighbor, when we simply choose to listen, we brighten our grid. We create a society where mental clarity and well-being can flourish. In this way, the Soulshine Grid reflects not just the population density of people in a city, but the density of kindness, compassion, and connection.

By focusing on this inner light, we can make our urban spaces healthier, not just physically but mentally. We can create places where the workings of the mind are as cared for as the infrastructure in the city, where public parks, fresh food, and physical activity aren’t just options but lifelines. This grid offers a vision of a future where light pollution—both external and internal—becomes a thing of the past.

A future where the brightest light comes not from our cities, but from the people who live in them.

Video Prompt for Runway.ai

  1. Show a time-lapse of a city transitioning between dawn and dusk, where the natural light fades into overwhelming artificial light. Start with the warmth of the sunrise, then slowly move into the harsh, blinding brightness of modern urban lighting. As the brightness increases, show an emotional shift from peacefulness to anxiety. Use contrasting colors: soft oranges and yellows for the natural light, sharp whites and blues for the artificial lights.
  2. Transition to a bustling commercial district with colorful neon lights and store signs flashing through the night, highlighting the excess and unnecessary brightness.
  3. Show a close-up of a household at night, where multiple lights are left on unnecessarily. Emphasize the intense brightness within the home environment.
  4. Illustrate insects and birds disrupted by harsh artificial lights. Zoom in on a moth or insect near a bright light source, showing the disturbance.
  5. Show a close-up of people in a darkened area with slight cold light, subtly indicating drug use. Focus on body language and shadows to suggest vulnerability and isolation.
  6. Show a person struggling to sleep or feeling overwhelmed due to intrusive light from city lights or streetlights, capturing the psychological toll.
  7. Create an animated city map where glowing dots represent human kindness and connection instead of electric lights. As individuals perform acts of compassion—like helping neighbors, sharing food, or listening—their dots glow brighter and spread light to others around them. Gradually, dim areas of the map transform into a bright, interconnected grid radiating warmth and love. Add an overlay of uplifting, ethereal music to evoke a sense of hope and inspiration.
  8. Highlight warm-colored, biodiversity-friendly streetlights in a city setting. Show people walking calmly, while nearby insects and wildlife remain undisturbed.
