Inspiration

Honestly? I created SoulMates because I had a crush and wanted the universe’s opinion. Was this person actually written in my stars, or was I just reading too much into Mercury retrograde memes? I realized there wasn’t a fun, free and easy way to check astrological compatibility with someone you actually like so I built one. Turns out, a lot of people are just as curious about their cosmic chemistry as I am.

What it does

SoulMates takes your birth chart and matches it with anyone you’re interested in celebrity, crush, or long-time love then reveals your astrological compatibility in a way that’s easy to understand (and maybe a little magical).

How we built it

I wrangled Bolt for the full-stack web app, Supabase for the sessions storage, Netlify for reliable hosting, plugged in Gemini for the cosmic calculations, and sprinkled in some AI for those personalized insights. The result is a web app that’s fast, friendly, and way more fun than doomscrolling through generic horoscopes.

Challenges we ran into

• Translating complex astrology into something even my skeptical friends could enjoy. • Making sure compatibility readings felt personal, not like a fortune cookie. • Convincing people to trust a web app with their birth info (I get it, privacy matters). • Debugging code at 2am while wondering if Saturn or Bolt was to blame.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

• Built something that people actually want to use (and keep using). • Got feedback from users who said Soulmates made them see their romantic interests in a new light. • Managed to make astrology feel personal, fun, and just a little bit magical.

What we learned

• Everyone’s curious about their compatibility, even the astrology skeptics. • User experience is everything; if it isn’t fun, people won’t stick around. • Sometimes, the best ideas come from your own questions (or crushes).

What's next for Soulmates

• Expanding to cover friendship and work compatibility (because cosmic connections aren’t just romantic). • Launching “Ask Astro,” the AI astrology sidekick for advice any time. • Adding more features for real-life matches and celebrity crushes. • Taking Soulmates from a side project to the go-to app for cosmic connection.
