Inspiration
The inspiration comes from our own experience of poor sleeping schedules as engineering students. As engineers, we are victims of many nights of tossing and turning, unable to fall asleep, many mornings startled by alarms, and incapable of focusing during lectures. This is the motivation behind the name of our project, SoulMassager, in which we hope that anyone using this design can have a restful sleep.
Project Description
The design is a tent over users’ heads. As the user falls asleep, the tent provides a light and noise-isolated environment through noise and light-cancellation material. During the sleeping cycle, noise and motion sensors keep moniter user’s sleeping quality through breathing rate and motion. The sleeping quality report will be summarised and sent to the user interface the following morning. When it’s time for alarm, the design will start diffusing the coffee scent, simulate sunrise by overhead LED lights, and play music.
Challenges & Building Process
A few challenges arose during the building process, being unfamiliar with the WIFI component was a significant one. The feasibility of connecting Arduino to the internet greatly determined the centre control for all the other components of the design. As the deadline approached, it was crucial for us to see if the process should be continued. As facing this challenge with tight constraints on time, we decided to divide into two groups where one group kept working on WIFI components and the other group developed a backup plan using only hardware components.
