Inspiration
We go in a loop on social media for hours without realizing it. The connection we built with our friends and community slowly fades away, and before we know it, we lose a sense of purpose/meaning to the people around us. It was then that our team had the idea to create a social media app for purposeful connection for high schoolers, similar to how LinkedIn connects professionals. A survey taken by students from our school reported that 33.3% of them aren’t part of any organizations or volunteer services. SOText will bring this issue to an end and connect you to a community where you can connect and grow. We decided to create the fresh screens for our startup idea in this hackathon, and it features texting and integrated AI for a calendar and card table system.
What it does
Allows high schoolers to connect to each other and to organizations and organize themselves in one app
How we built it
Most of the app was built with expo. Firebase provided storage and the database. AI models were served with vllm and connected with firebase functions.
Challenges we ran into
The Jupyter notebook with the AMD GPU did not allow outside api or ssh connections, so we could not use its generative AI capabilities. We managed to run the entire application on the GPU, but despite many attempts we could not open it on that limited environment. We ended up running the AI model on a laptop, which was significantly slower and less useful.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Despite our first time integrating Artificial Intelligence into a react native project and facing many significant errors and issues. We managed to successfully integrate Qwen into our project to generate cards for organizations to manage their time efficiently while making detailed tasks.
What we learned
How to integrate AI into our app and with the AMD GPU
What's next for SOText
Looking towards the future, we at SOText plan to integrate Artificial Intelligence into strategic locations in our app. Transforming the experience of thousands of users within our application.
