Inspiration
We were inspired by the growing concern around personal safety and delayed emergency response, especially for people walking alone or facing dangerous situations. Many existing solutions are either too complicated or lack important features such as live location sharing, medical information access, and quick emergency support. We wanted to create a modern, simple, and accessible platform that helps users feel safer and receive immediate support during emergencies.
What it does
Soteria is a smart personal safety application that provides fast emergency assistance through a modern mobile platform. The app includes an SOS emergency system, live location sharing, trusted contacts management, medical emergency profiles, Safe Walk monitoring, emergency history tracking, and a realistic Fake Call feature that helps users safely leave uncomfortable situations. The app also supports dark mode, customizable emergency settings, and a premium subscription model with advanced features.
How we built it
We built Soteria using MeDo, an AI-powered application development platform that helped us rapidly design and generate the application prototype. We created the app structure, workflows, UI/UX design, and feature logic through detailed prompts and system planning. Firebase services were used for authentication, database storage, and backend integration. We also designed custom UI screens, realistic emergency simulations, and modern mobile interactions to create a polished MVP experience suitable for hackathon presentation.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was balancing realism with MVP limitations during the hackathon timeframe. Some emergency features normally require paid APIs or advanced backend systems, so we had to simulate services such as emergency dispatching and live tracking while keeping the experience realistic. Another challenge was designing an interface that remains simple and fast during stressful emergency situations.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of creating a polished and modern safety application with a complete user flow and professional UI/UX design. We successfully implemented core features such as SOS activation, Safe Walk, Fake Call, trusted contacts management, and emergency history tracking. We are also proud of designing a realistic prototype that demonstrates how technology can improve personal safety and emergency accessibility.
What we learned
Through this project, we learned the importance of user-centered design, especially for emergency and safety applications where speed and simplicity are critical. We also improved our understanding of mobile UI/UX design, Firebase integration, workflow architecture, and AI-assisted application development using MeDo. Most importantly, we learned how technology can be used to create meaningful solutions that support public safety and well-being.
