Inspiration

I've been sharing my passion for math for 4 years as a tutor. I noticed that students had difficulties on new subjects in math because the basics were not well assimilated. That's where it all started. How do you help students understand and assimilate the subject seen in class?

What it does

SOSmaths is for high school students who have difficulties in mathematics. The great innovation of the project is that the student has an app that allows him to get help from a math tutor when he encounters a blockage while doing his exercises, revisions or homework. In just 30 minutes, according to defined time schedules, the student will have "a tutor on the phone".

The student downloads the app, registers and then registers his/her parent on the website to obtain a parental code. Then, he asks his questions as soon as he encounters a blockage. Once the tutor is found, the course takes place either by Chat or via a high-performance Virtual Classroom with an interactive whiteboard. The parent can access a web interface to follow the sessions his/her child has received.

Time schedule :

Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 4 pm to 10 pm

Wednesday from 2 pm to 8 pm

Saturday from 9 am to 12 pm

Sundays from 4 pm to 10 pm

How I built it

To build the whole platform here is technologie used.

Mobile side: Flutter technology.

Server side: Django docker with Python technology.

Communication between mobile and server: Rest API.

DB: postgreSQL.

Virtual Classroom : API of a classroom provider.

Challenges I ran into

1- To define what is really important for student in order to focus in some features that really bring value.

2- First beta test with a little groupe that shows some problems in our virtual classroom. So we choose another classroom provider to fix it. Integration of their API require some creartivity.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

SOSmaths has participated to the Innovation Digital Award (IDA) organised by SudPresse (Belgium) and won the first price. SOSmaths also won the first price of DEUSE contest (web development agency - Belgium)

Since the beginning of the covid19 situation, we decided to open the platform in order to help students and parents by providing free course in math. More than one hundred course performed. Parents are satisfied and we got positif feedback from students.

It has also brought lot of teachers who want to help students and who do so with passion and determination.

What I learned

I learned that students are really interested to be autonomous and to ask for help when they really needed. They want to get in touch quickly with someone who will give them some keys and allow them to advance.

What's next for SOSmaths

SOSmaths is a very young platform. We are running now the MVP (Minimum Viable Product) Next step for SOSmaths is to build strong platform taking account all feedbacks received from users. Add some features to make it more user friendly.

Our concept can easily be adaptaded to other subjects : SOSphysics, SOSscience ... We will be also make it available for student at university.

In further stage, there is a possibility to allow tutor/teacher creating their own virtual classroom and invite their students

It could be used at the school as a flexible and cost effective interactive whiteboard for physical course or simply to perform online classes.
